What honking does

Every 10 dB sounds about twice as loud to the ear. A horn is many times louder than a calm street. Noise from honking and traffic leads to:

Who suffers most

81.2%

Traffic police

of Pune traffic police studied had hearing loss. In Patiala, 61% reported ringing in their ears, and none had ever used ear protection.

Children

Small ears

On the street, in school buses and in prams, they take the full blast of every horn.

All of us

The elderly, the sick, animals

Every horn reaches them too, in homes, hospitals and on the roadside.

Why we honk

Most honking comes from impatience, not need. Silence is a form of respect. A calm driver is a civilized citizen.

The gift of listening

The ear is one of the most beautiful creations of the Divine. It sits on both sides of the head, open like a microphone, gathering sound from every direction and carrying it inward through one small, delicate opening.

Ancient wisdom teaches that listening is a path inward. In deep meditation, true listening leads to stillness, and stillness leads to the Supreme.

Yet every day, we dull this sacred gift with noise we create ourselves.
